Last week, a judge in Kansas granted a trans woman a temporary injunction in a lawsuit against the state for violating her due process by invalidating her license overnight. Jamie Miller brought the suit against the state following the passage of SB 244, which not only requires drivers licenses to reflect a person’s sex assigned at birth but mass invalidated all previous licenses where a change to the gender marker had been made.
The injunction Miller was granted will allow her to continue to use her license with the correct gender markers until the conclusion of her case. Judge James McCabria, the judge handling the case, wrote of the injunction, “No other remedy will suffice.”
The court found that Miller’s case has “a substantial chance of prevailing,” a finding that bodes well for the broader fight against the law, which has been implemented in a particularly cruel and haphazard way, as previously reported by Assigned Media and others.
The Log Cabin Republicans officially dropped their support for transgender Americans, stripping the letter T from the acronym on their website to brand themselves officially as an LGB organization. Previously, the group had already stated their opposition to gender-affirming care for trans minors and transgender participation in athletics. The gay Republican group, which officially began supporting trans rights in 2015, announced this change in an op-ed on Thursday written by the organization’s president, Ross Hemminger.
In 2016 LCR declined to endorse Donald Trump for president, citing uncertainty about how he would treat LGBTQ Americans. In his presidential runs since, however, the ostensibly pro-LGBT organization endorsed his presidency, with one major fundraising event in 2024 rejecting pride flag usage and mocking pronoun usage.
In the op-ed, Hemminger cites the right’s culture war against trans people as the reason behind its abandonment of trans people. The piece also addresses the right’s eroding support for same-sex marriage.
On Saturday, hundreds of WNBA fans gathered to support transgender inclusion outside of Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn ahead of the New York Liberty game. In a rally marked by expressions of joy and solidarity, basketball fans expressed their support for the trans community with dancing and bubbles. The outpouring of support came after widely publicized anti-trans remarks by the WNBA’s Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever, the opposing team. The Liberty would go on to beat the Fever 109 – 102.
The rally also attracted counter protesters. In a viral video, reporters for Sportico asked protesters on each side to name 5 players in the WNBA. While pro-trans rally goers could rattle five names off with ease, the anti-trans side repeatedly hit a wall after naming Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark. While lighthearted, the video highlights the gap between fans of women’s sports and representatives of a movement that claims protecting women’s sports is its goal.
