The right wing campaign to reshape school boards across the country has succeeded in placing some mighty interesting folks in proximity to youth. One such person is Marvin Lowe, who won a seat on the school board of Frisco, TX, with the support of national conservative groups. Lowe ran on a platform opposing CRT and “sexually explicit” educational materials, a dog whistle for material referencing LGBTQ+ identities. Lowe is now back in the news after a student from Brownsville made a complaint about his inappropriate behavior at an educational conerence in San Antonio last fall.
As reported by Susan MacFarland of the Dallas Morning News, the trans boy has participated in a session titled, “Transgender Students in Texas Schools: What You Need to Know” where he spoke about difficulties including discrimination in locker rooms and restrooms. After the session, Lowe initiated an encounter that made the teenager uncomfortable.
After Lowe described men’s junk and the arousal he believes could result from having people with different genitalia in a locker room, the student’s mother attempted to step in to let Lowe know his behavior was making her son uncomfortable. Lowe refused to drop the subject and became irate. He repeatedly insisted that “people get aroused” in the presence of members of the opposite sex, necessitating the intervention of bystanders to get between him and the teen’s mother, and eventually needed to be escorted out of the room.
The student, who is currently 17, has described the experience as dehumanizing. Sounds about right!
UPDATE: On March 1st the Dallas Morning News reported that Lowe, who had refused five requests to comment on their story, contradicted the teen’s version of events on conservative talk radio.
