VT: School District Website Hacked, Shut Down, After Right Wing Press Spotlight

via Auditi Guha for VT Digger, an independent investigative journalism website

The story of a high school volleyball team where cisgender girls object to changing with a trans teammate, which we’ve been watching here, has resulted in a act of transphobic hate against the school website. The district has shut down its website and social media accounts in response.

VT Digger’s story focuses on the content of an email sent to community members by the superintendent for the school district, but notes that coverage in the right wing press has focused on the account of one of the students and “does not appear to present a full picture of what occurred.”

As reported in VT Digger, superintendent Layne Millington said that the hack of the school website did not contain threats, writing, “While the speech has been disgusting and disturbing, it has not been threatening.” Millington also criticised the coverage in the right wing press in his email, and implied that the true story differs from what has been reported.

In his Saturday email, Millington criticized the news media for trying to "make it look like the district refuses to comment for some nefarious reasons when the know the law prevents us from doing so."

Assigned will continue to follow developments to this concerning story.
