Small, Weird Twitter Account Condemns Aretha Franklin’s “Natural Woman”
Trans activists, by which we really mean twitter randos, are at it again!
by Evan Urquhart
A newly created Twitter account that claims to represent a group of Norwegian trans activists has been posting some craaaazy takes, and the right wing media is ON THAT SHIT. The New York Post reports that the account, called TCMA: Trans Cultural Mindfulness Awareness, has condemned the song “Natural Woman” on the (absurd and unrelated to trans rights) grounds that there is no such thing as a natural woman.
The tweet about Aretha Franklin’s “Natural Woman” is arguably one of the more reasonable ones posted by this small, weird group who purport to be trans activists. Another tweet reads:
“TCMA is urging a boycott on Zara and H&M until such a time as they discontinue with having a separate Men's and Women's section. Separating clothing by gender is transphobic. All clothing should be without gender labels to protect the trans community.”
The account has said it’s not a parody, though, so clearly no responsible reporter could claim they’re a completely fake group, most likely created by right wing grifters for attention, or that the New York Post most likely knows that, too, because it’s so incredibly obvious. (We at Assigned will NOT, therefore make any such claim.)
What we can say is that the Twitter account claims that their organization, TCM, was founded quite recently, in January 2023. The Aretha Franklin tweet, made on January 20th, seems to have been their very first post. Also, the Twitter account does not link out to any outside website for the organization, provide contact information, information on the staff or membership, any sort of press kit, further information, etc. TCMA is also not followed by any prominent trans people or trans rights organizations, and while it does follow some such organizations itself, its earliest two follows are a locked account for a woman from Kentucky and a second American woman, Laurie Lawson, whose bio says “I am a married mother of 4 that absolutely loves my life and my family. Praising God everyday for the blessings in my life.” It does not seem to follow or be followed by anyone from Norway, where the group claims to be based.
They say they’re a group of Norwegian trans activists, though, so that’s what the right wing press is going with, no matter how stupid or unlikely that seems. Oh well!
UPDATE: The account in question, whose name has changed to TCMA: Trans Cultural Mindfulness Alliance (which is much less funny) now admits they are a parody account, and blames the media for believing them.
