Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt has called for the state legislature to impose a total ban on all transition-related medical treatment of children and adolescents. These interventions, though still quite rare, represent the best known treatment for gender dysphoria in youth, and are endorsed by all major US medical organizations.
Stitt’s call for a total ban on these treatments, which coincides with a major disingformation campaign in the conservative and far right press smearing these treatments, came alongside his signing of a bill authorizing funding for the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. The funding bill banned the health center from using funds for “gender reassignment” treatments on patients under 18. As a result, OU has ceased providing these services to young trans patients.
