Are women really empowered by the Miss Universe pageant? After the pageant was bought by Anne Jakrajutatip, a trans women, that became the question for conservative men on Twitter. "From now on it’s going to be run by women, owned by a trans woman for all women around the world to celebrate the power of feminism!" Jakrajutatip reportedly said. Fox News today has the story of some conservative men’s objections to this statement, in the name of female empowerment.

The heart of their concern doesn’t seem to be that beauty pagents have never been particularly empowering for women, that the specific owner the pageant’s parent company seems unlikely to change that in any huge way, or that in some quarters feminism and women’s empowerment have become shallow corporate buzzwords and should be taken with a grain of salt. No, these men’s objection is that the woman who claims her ownership of the Miss Universe pageant will usher in a new era of goodness for women is transgender.

"It's not FEMALE EMPOWERMENT when the first woman to own the Miss Universe pageant organization was born a man," conservative influencer James Bradely wrong.

All told, the Fox News article quotes the tweets of five named individuals objecting to Jakrajutatip’s comments (there is also one unnamed follower of Ian Miles Chong quoted by Fox whose gender identity is unknown). Every single one of the people Fox quotes defending womanhood in the context of the ownership of the Miss Universe Pageant is a man.
